After reflecting and putting my thoughts in order, I would like to take this opportunity to express my opinion on recent events. As expected, yesterday, President Trump’s administration released its first report on the research they are conducting on autism, as promised. And as expected, this report has caused countless reactions within the autism community and throughout society. It is important to remember that this process was promised by Trump during his election campaign.
Personally, I appreciate the effort being made to find answers to what is happening with autism. I watched the entire conference and the different points that were discussed, which have sparked much debate in the public forum. There are voices for and against what was said yesterday and what has been discussed about autism. I also include the unfortunate debates and fights that have been occurring in the autism community even before Trump, lest we forget that detail.
In my opinion, I see this process as a positive one. An opportunity to have a serious discussion in detail about the challenges that families and people with autism are facing, which have often been ignored and forgotten (especially with people with level 3 or severe autism). It is also important to know the difference between correlation and causation when talking about possible factors surrounding the increase in autism. At this time, I don’t think it’s right to jump to conclusions about the causes of autism. It’s a very complicated process, and there is still a long way to go. Not only in terms of research, but also in solving the current problems that families are facing right now while we have this discussion.
There are many opinions and stories surrounding this process. I understand the different points of view and stories of individuals and families in the community. It is my responsibility and duty to speak out about the realities faced by families impacted by autism. Especially those that lived with profound autism, whose voices have long been ignored, censored, and trampled upon. Autism is beyond ideologies or politics, and it is important to keep in mind and think about the process that is currently underway.
I know that this process is not easy for families. I understand and comprehend the emotional state that families and individuals affected by autism are experiencing, regardless of their positions on the administration’s investigation process. As I have always reaffirmed, I am not here to impose my views on you. Everything is happening for a purpose. The reality is that there are many questions and uncertainties surrounding autism, and it is important that all research be done to identify the causes and also to work on the steps to be taken so that all families and individuals with autism receive the support they need.
I reaffirm my commitment to providing the necessary support for families affected by autism. At this time, that commitment is stronger and more steadfast than ever. Regardless of ideology, politics, or beliefs, this affects us all, and it is important to have these conversations with respect and without censorship. Whether you are a mother, father, family member, professional, educator, or person with autism, I am here for you.
God bless you,
Sincerely,
Tony Hernandez Pumarejo
